Suspended, rotating, shaped Lucite prisms, wire rope, spectrums, reflected light
22ft. h x16ft. l x 15ft. d 1989
Commissioned for the executive offices of Aramark Corp. in Philadelphia, Pa.
The sculpture is made of shaped clear Lucite prisms which are formed with a
gesture of the hands after being heated. Groupings of the right and equilateral
prisms cascade from the southern skylight across the eastern skylight reflecting the
natural light.
Wire rope also known as aircraft cable suspends the prisms from the skylight
mullions with hangers designed by Joe Welch.
The suspended prisms utilize the morning and afternoon light of the atrium to
enhance the architectural design of the space by directing light patterns and
spectrums onto surrounding surfaces. Air currents create lively variations of prism
forms as pieces turn and catch the light. The change in season and time of day vary
the appearance of the environment.
